After another two weeks of marathon development, we are in our last sprint before some of us take a holiday break. But before we get too cozy with our chestnuts, we’ve got some big news to share on the latest work of the Token Engineering Commons. (Luckily, it’s going waaaay better than that GIF ☝️)

🌱 Funding Proposal Submissions Now Open!

“Uncle Griff” (Off topic: I was curious so I searched online — about the history of this iconic illustration)

The Token Engineering Commons is now accepting funding proposal submissions from Token Engineering and related open source projects focusing on TE public goods. TE project leaders can submit a proposal, get feedback from the TEC community and once the Commons is hatched, submit that proposal to the Commons for a vote to receive the requested funding.

How to submit a proposal:

  1. Go to https://forum.tecommons.org/c/proposals/7
  2. Click +New Topic and fill out the information in the template
  3. Join our Discord and post a link to your proposal in the🏄‍♂️tec-onboarding channel

Any questions, contact Onboarding Community Steward @eduardovegap (@vegayp on Telegram) or ask in the Discord channel and we’ll be happy to respond 😁

Check out the proposals that have been submitted so far:
Central Database — Django Rest Framework
Govbase — A Database for DAOs and Other Online Communities
Pictosis — NFTs for the Common Good

Projects that submit a proposal also have an opportunity to share their project and give an “elevator pitch” to the community during our weekly community call on Thursday at 11am PST / 2pm EST / 8pm CET.

📚 Governing the Commons: Exploring Ostrom’s 3rd Principle

Part of the TEC mission is to research best practices and create templates for governance and cultural practices in communities. Along with several collaborators, the TEC has been exploring and developing the research and implementations of Ostrom’s Principles in managing our cyber-physical commons (DAO).

In the latest forum post on this topic, we look at the third principle — participatory decision making is vital — within the context of the TEC. This work will be crucial in ensuring active participation and feedback from the community.

If you are interested in this work, the Soft Governance working group is actively working on this project to continue to build the framework and develop the processes which will eventually include all eight of Ostrom’s principles. Join the Soft Gov channel on our Discord or contact Community Steward @Liviade for more information.

You can also join the Governing the Commons book club — that is reading Elinor Ostrom’s book of the same name. The group meets every Tuesday at 11am PST / 2pm EST / 8pm CET on the book club Discord server. All are welcome and reading the book is fantastic, but not necessary to listen and engage in the dialogue. At the end of each session, 1000 PAN is raffled to one lucky participants as a courtesy of the Panvala Activity Fund.

🗳 Updating the Decision Making Process

Speaking of participatory decision making… In the Principle 3 post, there is also a section which discussed our latest community vote and decision — moving our voting process to the TEC forum. (Voting on voting? So meta, I know!). We previously held our first votes on our Discord via emoji vote, but now as we grow, the TEC has chosen to move voting and related discussions to the forum.

All jokes aside, this is incredibly important, as Ostrom’s principle discusses it is crucial for a self-governing community to have healthy, functional and engaged participation.

🎥 Your Economy, Your Choice: New Videos

Parameters Community Call from Dec. 4, 2020

Most DAOs and crypto projects function as technocracies, with developers making the decisions on most of the economic parameters of their token economy. In the TE Commons, we are opening up the discussion and process to the community, whereby participants can learn more about how these different decisions can affect not only the price and potential of the token, but also can affect other dynamics such as the legal, social and cultural aspects.

This is what Token Engineering is all about — looking at the various connections in complex systems, questioning and validating assumptions, modeling these mechanisms, and integrating the learnings back into the loop. The TEC holds community calls to discuss the parameters of the Commons multiple times a week. Check the TE Community Calendar for TE Param events and join the fun!

For those more technically oriented, and those interested in modeling these systems, check out TEC Labs Fridays at 8am PST / 11am EST / 5pm CET on the Simulations voice channel on our Discord hosted by community member Shawn @YggAnderson, who has started to create some analysis and modeling of some of the mechanisms being discussed. You can watch this video diving into some of the work.

🛣️ Adjusting the Roadmap

We always love an excuse to get out this meme and we can say thankfully, we’ve passed the lava pit phase and are somewhere around that third flag. We had a target to launch in December to aim high and push ourselves to iterate with speed, but to ensure the best hatch possible, we have adjusted our targets to provide more time for development, deciding our hatch parameters, communication, legal and onboarding working groups.

We are now set to launch in the early spring — check out our updated Roadmap for more details.

And now…

💎 The tallies are in! Impact Hour Leaderboard

For participation, TE Commons contributors are acknowledged via a praise bot and then that Praise is quantified and converted into Impact Hours. Through Telegram and Discord bots and bridges, community members dish Praise to each other to recognize work.

Impact Hours will be converted into TEC tokens at launch. As voted on by the community, the intention is that each hour will be worth somewhere between $20-$200 of contributions covested into the Hatch 🐣.

Congratulations on the hard work everyone and thank you for your contributions to the Token Engineering Commons! 🥳 Here is the full list of Impact Hours awarded for work from November 6–20:

Every contribution counts, and the Token Engineering Commons is incredibly grateful for its 165 active contributors that have earned Praise so far. 🙏 Below is a partial list of total Impact Hours to date, the full list and the math behind its calculation can be found in this spreadsheet:
